Janet Haslett

Janet Haslett is an artist whose practice revolves around the concept of time and its impact on our perceptions. Through her observational and research-based projects exploring landscapes, culture, and history, she delves into the interplay between the present and the past, the real and the imagined, as she reinterprets historical narratives to reorient them in the contemporary context.

Utilizing a diverse range of materials, from traditional mediums to recycled remnants from her studio, Janet creates paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Her artworks often transform, with paintings evolving into sculptures and sculptures emerging from the discovery of the extraordinary within mundane, overlooked everyday objects.

Janet’s recent artistic endeavours have garnered recognition, with her work being featured in significant exhibitions such as the inaugural exhibition Contemporary Art in the Secret site of Imogiri, Java, at Rumah Lebah Gallery, running parallel to ART|JOG17 in Yogyakarta. Her art has also been showcased in notable exhibitions including Hill End Table: Food, Fire, Art at the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Art Now Revisited at Kensington Contemporary, and Fear of Forgetting at Contact Sheet in Sydney. Janet has been the recipient of prestigious residencies at institutions such as Rumah Leah Gallery in Indonesia, the British School at Rome, ArtSpace Sydney, and the Pata Paris Studio. Additionally, she embarked on a research trip to Italy in November 2017 in preparation for a 2018 residency with GranitiMurales in Graniti, Sicily. Her works are held in both private and public collections in Australia and overseas.

Janet Haslett holds a Master of Fine Art (Painting) and a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) from the National Art School in Sydney. She also obtained an Advanced Diploma in Fine Art from the Sydney Gallery School in New South Wales. Currently, Janet serves as a sessional lecturer in the Drawing Department at the National Art School in Sydney, further enriching the artistic community. Her contributions to the art world have resulted in her artworks being sought after by collectors both in Australia and abroad.
