When you first land in Sicily, you are immediately confronted with the industrial side of Catania (the nearest Airport). The bus takes you straight through probably the worst parts of the city. But as the congestion, the rubbish, and the tall buildings fall away, you begin to notice Mt Etna on your left and the ocean on your right. And as you continue north, getting closer to Giardini Naxos, you get your first glimpse of the Alcantara valley stretching inland on the north side of Etna, and the majestic town of Taormina cresting the mountains that collide with the coastline ahead of you. The bus drops you just outside of the small coastal town of Giardini Naxos where you’re picked up and driven inland to the town of Graniti.
A quiet little town surrounded by nature, with spectacular views to be found walking or driving the nearby paths and roads. The Graniti Murales residency is an attempt to give contemporary artists a platform embedded within this small rural community. To experience firsthand the culture, the geography, and the community… and to find inspiration within one or all of these things.
