history

The history of Graniti dates back centuries, with evidence of its existence mentioned in a diploma from 1117. Throughout the years, Graniti experienced various changes in ownership and development, ultimately flourishing in the 1800s. The Roccachiacchere district, with its well-preserved houses featuring hand-carved stone jambs from the 18th century, stands as a testament to the town’s architectural heritage.

Graniti takes pride in its cultural symbols, including its coat of arms and banner. These were granted official recognition by the President of the Republic in 1988. The coat of arms features elements representing the town’s history and identity, such as fleur-de-lis, towers, lions, and lilies.

Graniti dates back to 1117 AD

The town is home to several noteworthy landmarks and places of interest. The Church of San Basilio Magno, the main church in Graniti, stands as a testament to the town’s religious heritage. Its construction dates back to the early 17th century, and it continues to be an important place of worship for the community. Another significant church, dedicated to San Sebastiano, honours the town’s patron saint and hosts religious celebrations throughout the year.

San Sebastiano festivities take place for 1 week, the end always being the first Sunday in August. During this week many Granitesi living all over the globe travel back to their home town to honour their patron saint (and of course to meet friends and family and visit their dead in the cemetery). During this time the streets of Graniti are filled with many foreign faces and different languages.

The anthropogenic geography of Graniti includes several charming hamlets, each offering a unique glimpse into the local lifestyle. Finaita, Muscianò, and Postoleone are the hamlets that contribute to the town’s vibrant community. Here, visitors can experience the warm hospitality of the locals and indulge in the renowned Sicilian cuisine. From traditional trattorias to agritourism businesses, Graniti’s hamlets offer an array of culinary delights, showcasing the region’s agricultural abundance. Locally produced wine, cheese, olives, chestnuts, almonds, peaches, cherries, tangerines, oranges, and lemons tantalize the taste buds, providing a true taste of Sicily.

There is the famous Cherry Fair in June. Graniti is one of the few places in Sicily where cherries are grown due to special climate conditions.

The economy of Graniti primarily revolves around agriculture, capitalising on the region’s fertile land. The town’s residents take immense pride in their agricultural heritage, working hard to produce high-quality products. The lush vineyards yield excellent wines, and the olive groves produce top-grade olive oil. Chestnuts, almonds, and an array of citrus fruits
