Robert Paterson

Canadian illustrator, designer, and printmaker Robert John Paterson is known for his “complicated minimalism,” blending 1940s science fiction with 1960s graphic design to tell stories through simplified shapes and vivid colours. His Graniti mural, Ho Guidato Tutta La Notte (“I Drove All Night”), inspired by Roy Orbison’s song and his time away from home, reflects themes of love, anticipation, and return. The work appears as an abstract geometric mosaic that gradually reveals a Sicilian village, symbolising the reward of arrival after a long journey. Having studied at the Art Institute of Toronto and OCADU, Paterson continues to create expressive, story-driven art across multiple media.
